You drop your dog off at the groomer, grab a coffee, run a few errands and two hours later you’re wondering:

Is my dog ready yet?

We get it. Three or four hours can sound like a long time for a haircut.

But a professional grooming appointment is very different from a human haircut. Your dog isn’t sitting in a chair for three hours while someone continuously cuts their hair.

At Mimo, we generally ask clients to allow 3–4 hours for a full grooming appointment, while larger or more labor-intensive dogs may require up to 5 hours.

Sometimes we’re finished sooner. Sometimes we need a little longer.

Here’s what’s actually happening during that time.

A Dog Groom Isn’t Just a Haircut

When you go to a salon for a haircut, you probably aren’t getting your entire body shampooed, conditioned, blow-dried and brushed before having your nails trimmed, ears cleaned, paw pads trimmed and nearly every hair on your body shaped with scissors.

Thankfully.

Your dog, on the other hand, may be getting all of that.

A full grooming appointment can involve:

Consultation → Bathing → Conditioning → Drying → Brushing → Nails & Ears → Prep Work → Haircut → Scissoring → Styling → Finishing And each step affects the next.

A beautiful haircut starts with a properly prepared coat. If the coat isn’t thoroughly cleaned, conditioned, dried and brushed, it’s much harder to create the smooth, balanced finish we’re looking for.

So although the haircut is the part you notice most at pickup, a lot of the work happens before the scissors ever come out.

Bathing and Drying Take Time

A professional bath isn’t simply wet, shampoo, rinse.

Depending on the coat, we may use multiple cleansing and conditioning steps to remove dirt, buildup and excess oils while replenishing moisture and preparing the hair for styling.

Then we have to dry it.

A tiny short-coated dog and a large doodle obviously aren’t going to dry at the same speed. Dense and long coats need to be dried thoroughly, and the drying process itself helps prepare the hair for a polished haircut.

You can’t rush physics. We’ve tried negotiating with wet doodles. They remain unreasonable.

Then Comes the Haircut

Once the coat is clean, dry, brushed and prepared, we can start creating the haircut.

And this is where the style you’re requesting makes an enormous difference.

A short, practical trim may take considerably less time than a breed-standard haircut, Asian Fusion style, longer sculpted trim or detailed hand-scissored finish.

At Mimo, scissor work and styling are a major part of what we do.

We’re looking at proportion, symmetry, silhouette and movement. Sometimes that means going over an area several times, allowing the dog to move, looking at the overall shape again and making small adjustments.

Those final details are often what separate a haircut that’s simply finished from one that looks finished.

Why Can’t My Groomer Give Me an Exact Pickup Time?

Because we’re grooming dogs, not assembling furniture.

We can estimate how long an appointment should take, but dogs don’t always follow the schedule we’ve made for them.

We may discover unexpected matting once we begin working through the coat. A nervous or wiggly dog may need breaks. A senior dog may need us to work more slowly. Some dogs require two team members for certain parts of the groom to keep everyone safe and comfortable.

And occasionally, the dog before yours needs unexpected extra attention too.

We intentionally account for these possibilities when scheduling, but animals are unpredictable.

If another dog needs more patience, we’ll give it to them.

And if your dog needs it, we’ll give it to yours too.

Larger Dogs Usually Need More Time

This one is pretty straightforward:

There’s more dog.

More coat to wash. More coat to condition. More coat to dry. More coat to brush. And considerably more surface area to haircut and scissor.

That’s why at Mimo we may ask for up to five hours for larger dogs, particularly those with dense or high-maintenance coats.

It doesn’t mean someone is actively grooming your dog every second for five uninterrupted hours. It means we’re reserving enough time to complete every stage properly without rushing the dog or the work.

Add-Ons Can Extend the Appointment

Specialty services can also increase appointment time.

Creative color is a perfect example.

Depending on the design, adding dye can involve preparing and sectioning the coat, applying the color, allowing it to process, rinsing, drying again and then completing the haircut and styling.

A small pop of color and a full creative transformation obviously aren’t the same appointment.

Some of our creative work can add significant time because, well…

Turning your dog into a giraffe was never going to be a 45-minute situation.

Why Not Just Groom Faster?

Efficiency matters.

Rushing doesn’t.

We don’t want to inadequately rinse a coat because we’re behind. We don’t want to cut hair that hasn’t been properly dried and prepared. We don’t want to rush detailed scissor work.

And most importantly, we don’t want to force a dog through the process because we’re watching the clock.

There is a difference between working efficiently and asking a living animal to accommodate a deadline.

The appointment should work around the dog’s needs—not the other way around.

Should I Come Early to Pick Up My Dog?

Please wait until your groomer tells you they’re ready.

We know you’re excited to get them back, but many dogs become very excited the moment they hear or see their humans.

Your previously cooperative little angel suddenly realizes:

MY MOM IS HERE. I HAVE BEEN ABANDONED FOR 147 YEARS.

And finishing that perfectly round face becomes considerably more difficult.

Waiting for our call or text gives us the opportunity to safely complete those last details before your dog switches from grooming mode to GET ME TO MY HUMAN IMMEDIATELY mode.

So, How Long Should Dog Grooming Take?

There isn’t one universal answer, but at Mimo we generally recommend planning for:

Most full grooming appointments: 3–4 hours
Large or more time-intensive dogs: up to 5 hours
Creative grooming and specialty services: potentially longer

Your dog’s coat, size, haircut, behavior, matting and additional services can all affect that timeframe.

We’d rather text you a little later with a dog we’re proud to send home than rush through the last twenty minutes just because the clock told us to.

So when you drop your dog off, go have lunch. Run your errands. Enjoy the temporary absence of dog hair from your clothing.

We’ll text you when the transformation is complete.
